Hiking Some of the most beautiful and serene destinations in Teton Valley are accessible only by foot. There are many hiking trails that wind through, around, and above the surrounding mountains of the valley. Wander along a flowing stream. Explore open wildflower meadows. Summit a mountain peak. Discover a hidden lake or hanging canyon. Some of the most beautiful and serene destinations in the valley are accessible only by foot. After winter snow melts, and muddy trails begin to dry, the many trails on the west side of the Teton Mountain Range easily lure avid hikers and mountain bikers. The Big Holes offer mountain bikers challenging and forgiving rides and the western slopes of the Tetons offer hikers majestic views and great adventures. Here are a few local hikes in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest.  Teton Canyon Trailhead . . . Just 5 miles up Ski Hill Road from Teton Valley Cabins. Turn right after the cattle guard after the very small town of Alta. This dirt road follows the creek along the left and ends at two trailheads. The lower trailhead leads to Table Mountain Trail, a moderate/difficult 12.4 mile round trip hike through meadows of wildflowers and eventually up a scenic ridge to the summit of Table Mountain. The upper trailhead leads to Alaska Basin, a 10 mile round trip along gentle, moderate, and beautiful terrain. Either one of these hikes can be turned into a gentle out and back hike for families. From Darby Creek . . . Turn left onto Darby Road about 2 miles south of downtown Driggs. Follow this road east to Darby Trailhead. The trails split either north or south of the creek. Spectacular views are offered on either side. Take the south fork to visit the Darby Wind & Ice Caves, a 6.4 mile moderate round trip. If you enter the caves, make sure to bring warm clothes and a headlamp/flashlight. From Coal Creek . . . You can access the trail to Taylor Mountain, a steep 7.2 mile magnificent climb. At Grand Targhee Resort . . . About 10 miles up Ski Hill Road from Teton Valley Cabins. Hike up the winter access roads to the top of Fred's Mountain (Grand Targhee's main mountain) for magnificent views of the western side of the Tetons. Dreamcatcher Chairlift is open in the summer months as well. You can either take the chair up and hike back down, hike up and take the chair back down, or just take the chair for a round trip tour.
